He Didn’t ‘Forget the Pictures’

(Rick Wood article on New York Terrorist’s Attack. 9/11/01)

Rick Wood, Eastbrook Council Member and Journal/Sentinel Photographer, found himself in New York City on the morning of September 11, just blocks away from the World Trade Center. Suddenly, his assignment to photograph fashion models took a drastic turn as he began documenting "America Under Attack." Rick said, "It was crazy, going from a penthouse fashion show with Natalie Cole, Ivana Trump, Denise Rich and other celebrities, to the soot-covered streets of lower Manhattan where I saw buildings cascading, people screaming and running in fear, and dark clouds moving block by block over the city." As Rick and others neared the site, a policeman yelled, "Forget the pictures! Run north!", which only awakened in the journalist the desire to continue on southward.

Some of the images which remain with Rick include people walking around looking stunned, yet at the same time curious; victims and family members in shock; and pieces of paper flying all over. He saw buy and sell slips from the Stock Exchange, airline tickets with individuals' names on them, and someone's life insurance policy. With a camera between himself and others, Rick felt somewhat distanced from the reality of the suffering. He felt grief and pain, but was grateful he didn't personally lose any loved ones or friends. His main concern was for his own family, and being with them again.

Throughout the week, Rick definitely sensed the prayer of his family and the Body at Eastbrook on his behalf. Like all of us, he saw that the world is evil, but our God brings good even in the darkest times. "We are more concerned now with people than with profits. Americans have united, and have become interested in spiritual things. I have had so many more opportunities to talk about my faith with my co-workers than ever before."

Rick Wood, 47, has been a photojournalist for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel since 1978. He is a graduate of the Indiana University School of Journalism and has extensive foreign travel experience.

In July 2000, Wood visited Iraq to assess the impact of sanctions imposed on that country after Saddam Hussein's army invaded Kuwait in early August 1990. Wood also covered the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, and was with a delegation that visited North Korea in 1995. He has also traveled to Bulo Burti, Somalia, to photograph a hospital run by a Milwaukee church. In 1987 he traveled to Brazil and Haiti to photograph a story on preventable diseases that cause high infant mortality rates.

He and his wife, Robin, have 3 children and live in Whitefish Bay, Wis.

A word of background -- the London Daily Mirror is a notoriously left-wing daily that normally does not support America. From the London Daily Mirror and an English journalist, no matter what your views on President Bush's statements about a potential upcoming war with Iraq, this is very interesting. God bless America.

• Why bin Laden is Dead?  The news first came from sources in Afghanistan and Pakistan almost six months ago: the fugitive died in December and was buried in the mountains of southeast Afghanistan. Pakistan's president, Pervez Musharraf, echoed the information. The remnants of Osama's gang, however, have mostly stayed silent, either to keep Osama's ghost alive or because they have no means of communication. 7/11/02
